Mind
States : An Introduction to Light & Sound
Michael has spent
several years perfecting his concepts of "Light and Sound" and "Sound
Only" technology. He is one of the few neuro technicians that have strived
to present the various aspects of owning a photo stimulation device in a clear,
easy to read format. It is a work that should be considered by all experienced
explorers and well as the neophyte. It is a book whose time has come. It should also be noted that Michael
is the co-creator of one of the most sophisticated "Sound Only" systems
on the market. The 515 has been used with great success
in many areas from police stations to a wide variety of clinical, therapeutic
environments.

Mind States : An Introduction
to Light & Sound
by Michael Landgraf
I.
Welcome To Light & Sound Technology
A. What Is A Light & Sound Instrument?
A light and sound instrument is a mind entrainment tool. The
method by which this entrainment occurs is known as the Frequency Following Response
(FFR). Through the use of audio (headphones) and visual (eye frames with LEDs)
stimulation, listeners are gently guided into specific states of mind. Each audio
beat and light pulse is a specific frequency. Our minds "think" in terms
of frequency. Brainwaves change frequencies based on neural activity within the
brain, be it by hearing, touch, smell, vision and/or taste. These senses respond
to activity from the environment and transmits that information to the brain via
electrical signals. Hearing and vision are considered the favorable senses for
affecting brainwaves safely. By presenting these beats and pulses to the brain,
within a few minutes, the brain begins to mimic or follow the same frequencies
as the stimuli (the beats and pulses). This process is referred to as entrainment.
In essence, these instruments speak to the mind in it's own language - the language
of frequency.

B. Peak Performing In Beta.
Utilizing beat sessions can add to
the quality of our day. You can increase your performance, your productivity,
your ability to stay on task and fulfill your responsibilities. Beta light and
sound sessions are energizing. They help you get going. Chemical stimulants cannot
compare. Chemical stimulants have been known to produce negative side effects
(i.e. physical shakiness and grumpy attitude as the effects subside). Beta/energize
sessions have no negative side effects.

Hi Ed: Here is my testimonial regarding the Foot Shaker....I am very
happy to provide it. In addition, I wanted to inquire as to the possibility
of selling the Cerebrex in my practice. As a Holistic Health Practitioner,
I have a private practice in Newport Beach, CA, as well as working
with a physician, at the Center for Optimum Health, in Fountain Valley
CA. Is it possible that I may purchase on a wholesale or discounted
basis to sell in my practice? I have a resale number. Having a sales
background before I went into the health field also helps.
In a short time I have already placed 3 orders...including today's...and
more to come. There are an amazing amount of people interested.
I have found the The Foot Shaker to be an invaluable tool for promoting
health, relaxation and the physical well being for both myself and
my clients.
My work involves balancing and harmonizing the energy systems of
the body, much like acupuncture, but without needles. Gentle touch
is applied to specific points on the body to stimulate energy pathways,
"meridians", allowing congested energy to be released, thus carrying
away toxins and debris which may compromise the immune system. The
work is called Acutouch. The result is a deep sense of relaxation
and well being. The Foot Shaker is a wonderful adjunct to this process
as it keeps the energy moving promoting this process.
It also provides stimulation to the lymphatic system of the body which
seems to strengthen the immune system.
As a holistic health practitioner, with a specialty in energy medicine,
I have discovered by using the machine between clients, I have more
energy and virtually no muscle tension after a 5-15 minute session
on the Foot Shaker. This has cut down on my need to pay for massage,
I require less sleep, and feel much more productive into the evening.
Because the Foot Shaker is an aerobic exerciser I also noticed my
weight stabilizing and starting to drop. I spend less time at the
gym and exercise classes.
My clients are finding it helps them to sleep better, and have more
energy and less tension and they find it timely replacement for lengthy
time consuming aerobic exercise classes. By using the Foot Shaker,
drinking lots of water, and walking several times a week, they have
reported weight loss as well.
Overall, it is a health promoting device that saves time and increases
energy and relaxation.
Enjoy!

Hi Ed, This Foot Shaker device is a trip! Hard to say what I'm experiencing
with it.
The unit works fine. I'm in recovery and hoping to overcome chronic
tiredness, anxiety and depression, and hopefully ease off the meds.
This is only my 2nd day with this, so it's too soon to tell how its
helping. I had one of the most restful sleeps last night, (with vivid
and useful dreams), that I've had in awhile... I'm having sensations
that the force of gravity has increased 3X, while feeling electricity
moving and vibrating around all through my body. My muscles are a
bit sore similar to when I first begin a new exercise regimen. Who
would've thought....? This is something I definitely want to continue
working with. It seems unusual, yet promising. I feel like soup at
the moment.
I'll fill you in more as things progress.
Thanks for recommending it!

Eddie....here's my testimonial....thanks for everything so far....Johnny....
Based on a recommendation from Edward Courtney, president of Cerebrex,
I purchased a foot shaker in early January. The first time I used
it was an amazing experience! During the session I only experienced
the lateral shaking motion, but as soon as the machine stopped I felt
a warm flow of energy rising from my toes to my head. This feeling
lasted for about 1-2 minutes and was followed by a state of relaxed,
energized calm which lasted for the rest of the evening. Subsequent
experiences were consistent with the first....I am very glad that
I took his advice on this unit. Words cannot adequately describe the
feeling....it must be experienced!

Hi Ed, My initiatory expereince with the Shaker is very positive.
Day 4 --- Three shakes and even better results. Mary Catherine came
over and tried five minutes on low. Liked the results on her polio
afflicted leg and related strains.
Day 5 --- Started the morning with what is becoming a routine; fed
the cat, built a fire in the wood stove, had a cup of coffee and a
glass of water and a shake! I was even more limber this morning.
I'd be interested in becomming a distributor of this product. Please
send me information regarding this. thanx,
Carl

Hello Edward, I received the Foot Shaker today. It arrived intact,
the only problem (very minor; not complaining) was that the flexible
button panel on the control was not stuck down. I rubbed it into place
and it is ok so far. If it comes loose again a few drops of adhesive
will fix it. It is as you described, well made and pretty quiet.
My first ride on it was quite interesting. That thing really does
shake a person a lot more than one would think. This is a good time
to try it since my back has been in spasm for over three days making
it very difficult to bend to pick up anything or even put my shoes
and socks on. The first shake tonight (15 min. on auto) made a definite
improvement in my lower back and made my upper back feel like it does
after a good massage. I am tempted to use it more than recommended,
but will try not to overdo it. I think that I will do it one more
time just before bed though.
I think that I am going to like this machine. After I have had more
experience with it, I will write a detailed critique for you.
Chris Kirian Cridersville, OH
I have had a Foot Shaker (purchased from E*C*) for over a month
now. I've been holding off writing about it until I finished experimenting,
but since it has come up as a subject, I'll give you what I have so
far. (Sorry about getting so wordy, but I tried to be as concise as
I could.) I happened to receive the Foot Shaker when I had had a lower
back spasm for several days. I could just barely bend enough to get
my shoes and socks on. When this happens, I normally have to go to
my masseuse to get rid of it. My first session on the Foot Shaker
made my upper back feel as though I had had a massage and my lower
back felt significantly better. After two days of use (twice a day
for 20 min.on auto), the spasm was gone. I've been using it the same
amount almost every day since then. I have arthritis in my spine and
elsewhere and bought the machine to help keep me flexible. The extra
good feelings have gradually decreased, but if I skip a day, I really
notice the extra stiffness. I too, experience that "tingling" feeling
when the machine stops. From the top of my head to the tip of my toes.
The feeling of the boundary between my body and my surroundings expands
and becomes very fuzzy and I feel as though I cannot move (however,
I can force myself to move). I feel like my body is "one" with my
surroundings or it doesn't seem to exist. I can move my hand close
to my body and feel a "field" like a static electric field that starts
about 3"-4" away and gets more intense as I get closer. From the first
sessions this was very intense and lasted for several minutes if I
kept still. It is now much less intense and lasts for maybe 10-15
seconds. This diminishing may be due to the different protocols that
I have been using. I started out with just the machine, then used
headphones with Egg of Time CD. Tried l/s with it a few times. Then
started using ces with a meditation tape for the last 3 weeks. I am
going to try going back to original protocols to see what happens.

I have a foot shaker, and had Ed's other model before that. (I gave
it to my ex) I have been using them for a few months now. I have also
used them, then stopped, then started, then stopped, then started
again. I can say with certainty that my general health is better when
I am using it daily. Both times I have stopped using it I got worse,
had less energy and didn't sleep as well. And, when I began using
it again, I improved, slept better & have more energy.
When using the foot shaker, I have less trouble with dehydration,
I have much more energy and I accomplish a lot more. I had several
recurring aches & pains in my hip joint, sacral area & middle back
that have bothered me for years.
They are all gone since my first week with a foot shaker. I too am
doing other things that might at first have confused me as to which
was giving me the benefit I experienced. Now that I have gone back
& forth a few times, I can state the foot shaker gives me more noticeable
benefit than anything else I do in regards to the things I mentioned.
The ankle rest is perfection in design. It cradles the ankles with
absolutely no discomfort, as on the machines without the padded ankle
rest. I just took my first 20 on it. It is terrific. It moves me faster
than the chi machine, which I have found corelates to more chi flow
after stopping. And, more importantly to me, its added weight kept
it from jiggling as the lighter chi machine sometimes does. And last,
it is SOooo much smoother & quiter in operation. Definitely a superior
machine! I suspect this translates to better internal construction.
I'll look inside some day. Also, I have five friends (including my
ex) who, after using mine once, got their own. They all swear by them
now too.

I also got one of Ed's foot shakers recently (about two weeks ago).
I have used it almost every day since then, as has my brother. We
both like it a lot. I don't have scientific evidence that it has been
beneficial to me, since the same day I got it, I also started to "Eat
right for my type" but I sure have felt pretty great lately. It's
definitely exercising my abs, and it looks to me like I may have lost
a bit of weight (since I don't have a scale, I don't know for sure).
I plan to continue to use it. In short, another thumbs up.

I had a condition on my left inside ankle for about 2 years that was
diagnosed as an "inflamed tendon". It was swollen and sore. It hurt
to walk or be on it for any length of time. The foot specialist put
my foot and leg in a cast to immobilize it for 6 weeks. It did not
improve. He said I possibly would have to have surgery to correct
the problem. He prescribed a brace which I wore for 10 months with
no apparent improvement except that I could walk and work with it
on without extra pain. I would try sometimes not wearing it to work
and I would pay for it with extra pain and swelling. After a week
of using the Foot Shaker, I have not worn the brace again. The swelling
has gone down and there is no pain in that ankle. I believe the Foot
Shaker has increased the oxygen in my body and that is helping to
heal my ankle. My brace cost $800.00 and the Foot Shaker cost considerably
less than that. Which one is the better value? The brace had a limited
benefit but the Foot Shaker will continue to give us benefits. My
wife and I (55 & 56 years old) both feel better and more alert during
the day since we have been using the Foot Shaker. When we get tired
or stressed during the day, we go spend a few minutes on the Foot
Shaker and feel refreshed. We decided to become dealers after we saw
the benefits we received from it. This is not a multi-level marketing
system. We are just interested in helping others receive the benefit
of the Foot Shaker.
So far we are happy with it. My mother has the Chi Machine and paid
about $200.00 more for it. We can tell no difference in the action
or noise level. This has more features My wife and I have been using
the machine twice a day for 5 minutes in the morning and just before
going to bed. (The instructions for the Chi Machine says to sleep
better use the machine just before going to bed and then immediately
get in bed without doing anything else.) We do seem to be sleeping
better and feel more alive during the day.

Hi, Ed: The foot shaker is in the house! I wanted to use it a few
times before sending you a response.
Here's a telling bit of info. The Foot Shaker was intended to be a
Christmas present from my wife, Beatrice, to me. She's quite strict
about Christmas presents, so she said, "Okay, you can try the thing
out ONCE and then we put it away until Christmas." I encouraged her
to try it out ONCE, as well. After one 15 minute session, she didn't
say anything about putting it away. The following morning, we both
gave it a second trial run. Surely, now she would insist that I put
it away. Hmm. She didn't. This may have had something to do with the
fact that she enjoyed the extra energy she was experiencing. Just
maybe. It's an extraordinary device. I have the sense that, like all
the 'chi' modalities from the East, the true benefits of the Foot
Master will accrue slowly over time. There's a macrobiotic aphorism,
"long, slow cures are long lasting cures."
Beatrice and I took some Chi Gung classes here in Vancouver with a
gloriously healthy Asian adept. His technique included, as one of
its foundation practices, a movement he called "snake action". This
movement involves moving the whole body in a sine wave motion similar
to that induced by the Foot Shaker. Something serendipitously synergistic
suggests itself here. Mind-l'ers deeply into sine wave aural resonances
discover chi machine that replicates macro sine waves in body motion.
Also interesting that the machine causes a lateral motion that is
widest at the feet and narrows to an infinite point at the crown of
the head and beyond. It produces, in effect, an energetic return up
Ygdrasil, the world tree, the seed/root of which grows in heaven with
the tree growing down, i.e., widening out into manifestation, the
temporal world. The Foot Shaker provides a continuous, sine wave communication
that starts wide in the temporal (at the feet) and progresses, to
mix metaphors, upstream into infinite life prior to its fragmentation
into multiplicity.
Am I reading too much into what a simple shake and wake machine does?
I don't think so. The relationship between time and eternity, so the
sages say, really is quite simple and right in front of us. The energy
dynamics of the Foot Shaker are, I suspect, based on some pretty sublime
simplicity. I plan to use the machine consistently, daily, and, if
you're interested, will keep you posted on what unfolds. I also plan
to introduce some friends to it. Cheers, Ed.

Hello Ed,
Yes, I got the Foot Shaker... Well, all I can say, is the whole family
loves this thing...The first night I came home from work with a lot
tension in my shoulders, and boy did I feel more relaxed afterwards...Then
my husband used it, and it seemed to loosen his lower back.. My 14
year old son used it, and could immediately see a need for it before
and after basketball practice. He now gets up earlier in the morning
before school (that's a miracle in itself) and uses the Shaker before
heading off to school. My 9 years old just loves the way it makes
him feel after the "shaking"...
I plan to give you a full detailed account at the end of the 30 days,
but I think this is a keeper...The lateral movement is so smooth...
I have no complaints thus far...

Hi Edward --
haven't heard from me for a while due to intensity of life. Yeah,
we got the footshaker, and I'll give you some reactions. First, I
really like it; seems to relax the tension in the back, and I feel
pretty good after using it. There is an energy buzz, which may indicate
oxygenation of the body -- slightly like tetany. More significantly,
Lynn says it has reduced very painful jaw tension (possibly tmj) that
she's had. The only thing that had helped before was cranio-sacral
work.

I purchased a Foot Swinger from Ed at Cerebrex. I placed the order
on a Friday and received it on Monday. Ed immediately sent me an email
order conformation and then later sent a package tracking #. In short,
I received fast, and professional service. Like I do with all new
toys, I took it apart to see what made it tick and can report that
the mechanism consists of a DC motor that appears to have sealed ball
bearings (good feature). The speed of the motor is varied by changing
the DC voltage across the motor which has an integral metal diecast
reduction gear housing that powers an eccentric cam that moves a nylon
rider back and forth on two steel rods. The foot cradle is attached
to the nylon rider. The whole assembly is fabricated from diecast
metal parts that appear to be sturdy and should hold up well under
heavy use. The foot cradle is fabricated from high density closed
cell foam.
I started using the foot shaker for 15-20 min periods and didn't feel
any after effects. I am in pretty good shape ( I racewalk) so I increased
the time to 30-40 min sessions and can now report that I feel sore
hamstring muscles. Immediately upon stopping the session my knees
felt sore but this went away quickly. Although it is hard for me to
understand what is happening, the fact that I have sore muscles indicates
to me that something good is going on.

Please note. Scott describes a machine that is now branded by Cerebrex
as the ChiFlex Aerobic Swing Exerciser. This machine is a very high
quality unit, similar to the Foot Shaker and marketed internally in
China, Taiwan and Chinese American communities within the USA
Just received my CHI Machine from cerebrex. No photos included, and
my Mandarin is a bit rusty, so I couldn't read the insert, but it
is certainly of Chinese origin. At first, it was battering my ankles,
then i turned it around and the fit was much better - handle towards
the body. WOW! These aren't gentle movements like the Graham Potentializer.
This thing rocks! Like if someone grabbed your ankles and rhythmically
shook you from side to side. Soon, your whole body is writhing like
a snake. Amazing how just that strong ankle movement can move your
whole body. I think that's why body size doesn't matter. After a few
minutes, the whole body synchronizes. sort of a resonant frequency
kind of thing. Feels like I just had a full body massage. And when
it stops, it kind of reminds me of that after effect you get when
you are using a high energy L/S program and it abruptly ends. Except
in this case, it's your whole body that's still vibrating. Loosened
up my entire spine. Energized me from head to toe. Feels good. Made
me laugh out loud. (and i'm sure it would have produced the same effect
for anyone walking into the room and seeing this snake dance.) Can't
wait to try it lying on my stomach....

Dear Mind-l,
this is an endorsement of the swingmaster chi-machine available from,
among others Ed Courtney, and also an endorsement of Chi Kung (the
two subjects are related).
I have found the swingmaster / swing machine / chi machine to be an
excellent technology which has tangible physical and psychological
benefits. I know I am not the first to commend this technology to
the list, and I agree with the positive comments made by others on
this list. For those unfamiliar with the swingmaster I recommend that
you go to Ed Courtney's site at www.cerebrex.com
I have found that it has pretty much cured a long standing back problem
within 1 month. I can't be absolutely sure because I have also been
practising Chi Kung simultaneously, which I am finding to be a profound
'life changing' discipline. And maybe the problem will recur in future.
What I can pass on to the list is personal testimony rather than scientific
evidence based on controlled experimentation. However, I can confirm
that EVERYBODY (n = 15) who has had turns on my swingmaster has 'fallen
in love' with it within minutes (age range = 7 - 61, mean = approx
30). In this context ' falling in love means anything from "that's
nice' to 'let me stay on just for a while longer', to "Whooo Hoooo"!
(there you go Ed!).
I believe (again I must emphasise that this is personal testimony)
that the swing machine / swingmaster strengthens, stimulates, and
makes supple, that area of the anatomy that the Chi Kung master Mantak
Chia refers to as the 'chi belt'. Simplifying things(?) this is the
cross section of the lower abdomen, embracing the sides of the waist,
the kidneys, and the navel. In Chi Kung this area is regarded as central
to the structural integrity of the body. And back problems betray
weakness in this zone. In my opinion, the swingmaster / swing machine
works out this area very effectively, and with results that are quickly
apparent. It is also relaxing, and fun, and when it stops it leaves
you with a nice tingly feelings (chi flow!).
With regards Chi Kung....

Indeed my wife, initially reluctant to try the device, now notes the
"good" feeling following her regular twice daily 15-20 minute sessions.
She has experienced a significant enhancement in energy level. Could
be due to a natural "up" cycle in her lupus manifestation, but the
improvement certainly coincides with her use of the Swing Master.
The negative ions could be helping too of course.
I'm very pleased [with the SwingMaster unit]. The energy/warmth felt
at the soles of the feet and the palms are similar to the energy "currents"
I feel while practicing Tai Chi. My wife, long suffering from the
fatigue and diminished energy symptomatic of Lupus has noticed significant
positive results using the device for 10 days or so. This early assessment
suggests that the claims made for the device are well founded.

A few months ago I saw a brief item (somewhere? sorry!) about a change
in viewpoint regarding brain cell regeneration. It has always been
believed that in the case of alcohol and other abusive substances,
the brain cells were lost forever. Some new research has suggested
that it may not be the case.
Products such as Source Naturals' Megamind (may vendors have similar),
used consistently, should have beneficial effects.
So should any activity that increases oxygen to the brain on a consistent
basis. There are many 'breathing programs' available in books and
videos.
I might also suggest that wonderful little gadget known as the Swingmaster
from Cerebrex, to increase the circulation of oxygenated blood to
every cell of the body and circulate out the sludge. I'm on my 5th
day of 'swinging' and loving it!!

do some tai chi to shift energy back down. She thought it would be
useful for people who are very debilitated to stir up energy. Also,
when she just saw the machine [without using it] and understood how
it works [drag feet side to side] she immediately told me what meridian
is most affected......and said "oh, now I see what they are doing
/ how it works".
I'm using it 5 minutes twice a day, with bubble-wrap between my ankles
and the machine. :) slow speed. Ankles seem happier. Not sure about
the effect on the rest of me, but doing the experiment......

I know this seems like a short while to return and testify, but I
still feel energized almost 3 hours after my first exercise. I am
very pleased! And, now the feeling of, "Uh, oh! I had a workout" in
my muscles. I particularly feel it in my butt, lower back and abdomen.
That machine does indeed give a real workout. Amazing little thing!
It is so neat I want one, and.... I have one!

Hi Ed,
I am writing to give you feedback on the SwingMaster. I love it. I've
been using it 2-3 times daily for 15 minutes on automatic. I have
found that I need padding to prevent ankle irritation. I use af olded
towel. The benefits that I've noticed are weight reduction, improved
skin tone, fat percentage reduction, and general overall good feelings.
I broke my elbow several weeks ago and the only exercise I've had
is the Chi machine. There's no way of telling for sure but i think
it is helping it heel quicker.
Yous's in good chi,

I ordered a Swingmaster from Cerebex and I love it. I don't know anything
about the various claims made for it. All I can say is that after
15 minutes on it I sense a great feeling of rejuvenation.

Hi Ed, My Mom just loves her Chi Machine. In fact she wants to place
another order. Problem is we lost your phone number.

Swing
Master Control Instructions:
First of all the Swing Master has a multi-speed controller with
integrated timer. Yes, you have the most sophisticated control mechanism
on the market. It very simple to use. First press the on off button.
You should hear a little chirp/beep as well as a pilot light display.
Once "on", you have two choices. You can press the timer button and
it will lock onto one of the 4 time settings (5-20 min) While in any
given time setting you can adjust the swing velocity via the up/down
arrow buttons. Simple as that.
Note that you just don't have multi-speed control, but you also have
"variable" speed control. Your second choice is the auto button. Pressing
the auto button sets off a pre-configured session.
The session starts off at the 15 min time setting, while swing velocity
is gradually increased from low to high as the unit automatically
cycles down through 10 and 5 min. time parameters. Amazing no? Note
that while in auto mode you cannot adjust swing velocity or time parameters.
The pre configured session locks in and takes over.
